ABOUT PAUL CURTIS GLASS SCULPTOR Paul Curtis Glass Sculptor, also known as Paul Curtis Glassblowing is a home based business with our retail Glass Blowing Shop located at the Sea World Adventure Park in San Diego. We have been doing business in San Diego since 1992. I learned my trade from my longtime friend Don Hauslik in 1972 while going to High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Some of the sculptures on this site are made in collaboration with other longtime grade school friends Alan Caspersen and Mark Hodges. Our license restricts our retail sales to mail order through our web site or our retail location, so we ask you to please contact us through information provided on this site.

GLASS Many people refer to this product as "hand blown glass". This is not blown glass, but sculpted glass. Technically, the name for this is "lamp working" and dates back to the Persian empire around 2000 B.C. The raw material for this product is high borate glass (Pyrex®). Propane and oxygen are used through a torch, to heat and soften the glass so that it can be shaped by pushing, pulling, bending, and detailing with hand tools. All of the glass must be kept hot while working and then placed in a kiln and cooled slowly to relieve stress in the glass. Some people refer to this product as "crystal". The dictionary defines crystal as "a high quality clear, colorless glass." So, this does qualify as crystal; however, most people think of leaded glass when they say crystal. This is not leaded glass.

MANZANITA WOOD The wood we use is called Manzanita. It is a woody chaparral plant that grows in the mountains of the southwest and Mexico; in Spanish it means little apple. The wood is harvested, fumigated, cut, sanded, and finished with polyurethane. Each sculpture has unique wood. Felt pads are added to the bottom to protect furniture.

GOLD The gold, known as gold leaf, comes in a brown liquid form which is painted onto the glass and fired in a kiln. The firing transforms it to shining 22 kt. gold. Care should be taken when cleaning your glass sculpture, so the gold is not scratched. We suggest spraying the entire glass and wood with glass cleaner, rinsing it with warm water under a shower head or faucet, and drying with a soft towel or cloth.
